Beekeeping supports self-reliance in Africa. Crucially for women, beekeeping can be fitted in with other activities at home. The key to success is knowledge, and not expensive equipment. This is why we send women beekeepers practical information in our Bees for Development Journal - free of charge.

Situation

Women in Africa have many domestic duties, yet desperately need their own source of income for medicines, clothes and transport. They need income generating activities which they can manage at home and do not add an extra labour burden to their busy lives. Many women do not own land, so they need home-based activities. They need something they can own, so they can decide how the money earned should be used. This project is solving the problem of women's poverty and disempowerment.

Solution

Beekeeping is an income generating activity which does not need large land ownership and is not labour intensive. It fits well with the constraints women face on a daily basis. In Uganda, women farmers are earning an extra UK£50 a year from keeping 4-5 colonies at home. This project will provide information, practical know-how and technical advice to women's groups so they can start beekeeping. No equipment is given. This way we promote self-reliance and reach more women with the funds we have.
