Situation
In rural Nepal, schools are scarce and libraries are still non-existent. Children still learn via the root method without the provision of books. Teachers lack the teaching resources essential for inspiring themeslves and their pupils. As a result, literacy rates are as low as 11% in some rural areas. CAIRN Libraries will be equipped with up to 5,000 Nepali and English age specific books, as well as other learning resources e.g. puzzles, abacuses, posters. CAIRN aims to build 25 Libraries by 2014 and thus provide over 50,000 books to children in rural areas. CAIRN Libraries will provide employment by training and developing upto 50 librarians within the local communities for up to 3 years. The cost of constructing and equipping a CAIRN Library is £5,000.
