    Situation

In Nepal, education is still not compulsory. Although 84% of the Nepalese people (22 million people) live in rural areas, schools are either scarce or dilapidated. Of those children attending school, their journey can consist of a 3-4 hour walk each day across tough terrain. As a result, attendance rates are poor and/or children start their primary education late culmintaing in literacy rates are as low as 11% in some rural areas. CAIRN aims to build 15 rural schools by 2014 ensuring that at least 6,000 children in rural areas have increased access to an education. The cost of a school varies from £7,000 for a primary school educating up to 150 children to £20,0000 for a primary and secondary school, educating up to 500 children. We work with the village communities who either donate the land and/or provide the labour to build the schools.
