    Situation

Much of the UK’s social housing for disabled people was built long before green building regulations, fuel efficiency and optimised insulation. Poor design, inefficient use of energy and rising fuel prices have made such accommodation costly for disabled tenants and the environment. After widespread consultation with our stakeholders and partner organisations, we know there is an urgent need to address the lack of environmentally-advanced social housing for disabled people.

    Solution

Cambridge Eco-Living will be an exemplar scheme, offering attractive, environmentally friendly, independent living accommodation to local disabled people, at the heart of an emerging community. The scheme comprises retrofitting dilapidated, empty social housing with sustainable and fuel efficient technologies to create independent living accommodation for disabled people of all ages using the Greening-the-Box (GTB) process pioneered by Dr Jeremy Harrall of SEArch Architects.
