Education is not providing young people with the skills needed for them to fulfil their role in a vibrant economic community . We want to engage young people, many of whom are disillusioned with education, in a programme which will involve them in building a creative social enterprise with professional craft practitioners and members of the business community.

    Situation

This is a youth engagement programme which forms part of a major initiative aimed at developing a social rather than a capitalist enterprise. Craftspace, a leading crafts development organisation, with bring leading craft practitioners to work in partnership with young people to build a creative enterprise. Participants will develop a series of products for retail. This will be done through a management board which will be run by the young people. They will carry out market research, produce deslgn and packaging through to product placement. By developing a set of real life skills which are relevant to the place of work and to the environment in which young people live, participants can develop confidence and a sense of community. We propose working with two key target groups: 11-12 year olds in schools and 16-19 year olds who are not in education, employment or training. The project will run from autumn 2010-2013, Total project budget for 3 years is £230,500. We are applying to Trusts and Foundations for a total of £187,500, £9,000 will be contributed by partner organisations and £9,000 from our own funds.
