Working in Northern Tanzania, this project will empower pastoral women to become more self-reliant, to fight injustice and take control of their own bodies. This will be achieved by educating women on issues such as as domestic violence, and supporting women in land and property rights issues.

Situation
Gender inequality is prevalent amongst pastoralist communities. Findings from a research project commissioned in 2006 by our partner organisation in Tanzania, the Pastoral Women's Council, highlighted that around 86% of the pastoral women interviewed had been beaten or were being regularly beaten by their husbands, with nearly all of these women living in permanent fear of them. It was also reported by pastoral women that they have suffered abuse from their fathers and brothers.
Solution
It will help establish community “Women’s Rights Committees”, designed to promote women’s equal involvement in community activities. These committees will train women on their rights - rights to education, property, basic services, health care, representation and security against domestic violence - and will advocate for their needs at household, village, district and national levels. These committees aim to preempt future abuses and mainstream gender equality at varying scales.
