PWC is the only indigenous women led pastoralist organisation in Tanzania. Working in remote rural locations of the Arusha region of Northern Tanzania it aims to reduce the barriers faced by pastoralist women and girls to accessing their rights to education, productive resources, security and participation. "What we need is education. Most of the time we lose our land because we can't understand what is being written. If we could be educated and read and write then we would know what is happening to our place" Maanda Ngoitiko, PWC Founder

    Situation

Pastoralists are semi-nomadic livestock keepers, the best known being the Maasai. Their communities are patriarchal: women have little or no rights beyond day to day household management. This is reflected in every aspect of daily life. The project will run for three years and aims to benefit 10,000 Maasai and other pastoralist women and girls in Northern Tanzania and builds upon PWC’s previous activities. Working through a network of Women’s Action Groups (WAGs), PWC will strengthen each group through knowledge and understanding of rights and entitlements, education, credit funding and leadership development. The project activities will: 1. Increase the enrolment and achievement of girls at secondary school. Improve adult literacy rates and levels of nursery education, which guarantees a place in primary school. 2. Improve women’s (and family) financial security through access to credit and savings facilities, micro-enterprise training and running their own small businesses. 3. Reduce the incidence of domestic violence and abuse. 4. Ensure women gain leadership roles at community, Village and District levels. The total budget for the 3 year project is £320,000 and is broken down as follows: Education (£66,000), productive resources (£36,000), domestic violence programme (£56,000), participation (£27,000), capacity building (£21,000), advocacy and project admin (£23,000), investments (£12,000) and office admin (£79,000).
