Situation
Tanzania has one of the highest national HIV and AIDS prevalence rates in the world. The estimated HIV prevalence rate is 8.6% among adults aged 15-49, and 65% of new infections occur among youth aged 15-24 years. In Tanzania, lack of awareness and education, as well as gender inequality, are some of the main drivers of the epidemic. Moreover, women and girls are dis-proportionally affected, influenced by factors including low educational attainment and early or forced marriage.
Solution
Working with our partner in Tanzania, the Community Aid and Small Enterprise Consultancy (CASEC), African Initiatives will help provide HIV and AIDS awareness training to teachers and youth peer educators' across 14 secondary schools. As part of this project, weekly health club sessions and workshops will be held, in order to improve awareness of issues surrounding HIV and AIDS and life skills education and bring about a lower rate of infection in the area.
