    Situation

The 'Gate House' self-contained unit houses an adapted living environment, with kitchen, lounge, bedroom and office space, with full-time staff on-hand to deliver a personalised learning environment and support students with daily tasks onsite and in the community. The curriculum will include: • Basic food handling and hygiene skills and cooking • Healthy eating and nutritional advice • Numeracy, financial literacy and shopping • Independent travel advice and practice • Housework • Personal and health care advice • Communication skills • Support with recruitment, CV-writing and interview skills The plan also incorporates an accreditation process for the work the students complete here and off-site and it is envisaged that at least 50 students will receive OCN qualifications in numeracy, literacy, Information & Communication Technology and independent living skills in the financial year 2008-2009. Some areas of the curriculum are to be delivered in the workplace with the support of volunteers and mentoring from the HR departments of our current and potential corporate partners. The Gate House also offers ideal accommodation for small family workshop sessions. There is a wide range of topics we could offer for example: • a forum for discussion, sharing concerns, and obtaining information on a range of relevant topics. • a programme of one off information sessions. • a parallel programme for parents to complement and support the independent living modules. • learning to let go, how not to be dependant on young people’s disability allowances. • how to move young people into independent living (supported accommodation) The full costs of the project for the first year of operation are approximately £220,000. This can be broken down in to smaller donations for staffing and training costs, facilities and overheads and equipment and start-up costs.
