This project on the Thai-Cambodia border reduces people-trafficking by using education and income generation opportunities, preventing people putting themselves and their children at risk of trafficking. The risks are greatly reduced as people are helped to work locally through vocational training and micro-loans, and as awareness is raised in schools through an anti-trafficking education program.

    Situation

Tearfund has been successfully working with the poor in Cambodia for the last twenty years, partnering with local indigenous NGO’s who are best placed to understand the needs of their community. This project is run locally by the Cambodia Hope Organisation (CHO) who are passionate about transforming the Thai border area, where they are able to effectively reduce poverty and trafficking. In order to improve local opportunities for employment, CHO run both vocational and agricultural training, in conjunction with small loans, seed grants and pig banks. The agricultural program offers families a chance to cultivate their own crops, which they can sell to generate income. Groups of 10-15 families learn sustainable, eco-friendly practices, the nutritional value of the plants, and how to create a balanced diet for their families. The vocational program provides training courses and equipment in sewing, motorbike repair, computer training, welding and printing so that young people can become sustainable members of their family and community, instead of heading across the border. Also, some who are rescued from trafficking enter this program as part of a lasting solution to their vulnerability. The micro-loan program provides community members the chance to start their own business with the help of a free business training course, a small loan and the support of a business group. It is a way of breaking the cycle of low income jobs or unemployment and the inclusion of a business course lowers the failed repayment rate. The anti-trafficking awareness program teaches school children, village leaders, teachers and community members about the risks and dangers of human trafficking, child labour and prostitution. In the last year, 150 families have been in the agricultural program and 110 people have received vocational training. Over 4000 children were taught anti-trafficking awareness.
