The development of new and improved treatments for keratoconus (KC) is hampered by a lack of understanding as to what causes the condition. This research will increase our understanding of the genetics of KC and help determine the success and risks of potential new treatments.

Situation
Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea thins and changes shape, requiring corneal transplantation in severe cases. It affects around 1 in 2,000 people worldwide, is often a lifelong condition and while treatments are available they carry risks and are not always successful. 25% of the 2,500 corneal transplants in the UK annually are for keratoconus.
Solution
The ability to develop new therapies and to improve existing ones could be significantly enhanced if there is a greater understanding of the pathogenesis of keratoconus.
