    Situation

The Centre for Sustainable Energy recently secured funding to run a pilot project in 60 schools in the West of England. Teachers were provided with class kits containing 30 miniature solar panels, motors and circuits, along with a curriculum-linked handbook of activities. Teachers also attended an after school session to learn how to incorporate the use of the kits into their curriculum activities, such as basic circuits. The response to the kits has been overwhelmingly positive, as has the demand from schools that did not take part in the pilot. Unfortunately, the Local Education Authorities we have approached are not keen to fund further roll-out of the project, believing that sustainability issues are now covered by the curriculum and that teachers should therefore make reference to renewable energy in any case. We believe that a cursory nod towards sustainability is no substitute for allowing children to gain hands-on experience of renewable energy in action. This project is incredibly cost effective, as it works with groups of 15 local schools at a time, combining the training for all schools in one evening session, and resulting in a per-school cost of only around £350 (including the kits themselves). Donors could therefore consider funding this project for one group of 15 schools, or as many multiples of 15 as they wished. Please contact us for further details - the cost of the project per group will vary slightly depending on the location of the schools in relation to us.
