RIF provides vital books to children in areas of disadvantage, who often have no books of their own at home. RIF invites them to family and community events that inspire these children to read and learn.

    Situation

In each project, children choose books of their own to keep at a programme of events. For many of these children these are the first books they have ever owned. The events are designed to highlight the fun of reading and may include, for example, a visit from an author or storyteller. They also actively seek to involve families and communities, recognising the vital role they play. Children also receive book plates, stickers and a backpack to carry their books. RIF introduces children to books in a way that builds their confidence and captures their imagination. Projects are based in a wide range of community organisations, in areas of deprivation. This helps us to reach as many children as possible, and enables us to spread awareness of the importance of making reading fun. We work with local authorities and schools to identify children who would most benefit from taking part in a RIF project. "Thank you for my book. I now have TWO books on my bookcase at home." Misha, aged 6.
