    Situation

HEADS UP is a drama-development and training programme and creative conference held for and by young asylum-seekers, refugees and other migrants in Kidbrooke School and Lewisham College’s Post-16 ESOL Units. HEADSTART is a project for refugee and asylum seeker children and other young people who are isolated from their peers, in an unfamiliar urban environment, unable to gain a school place due to lack of places. The project helps young people make friends, and prevents social and mental health issues through building English skills, confidence, self-esteem and giving them a safe place to play. LOUD AND CLEAR is an innovative pilot project that will train Early-Years staff in creatively supporting pre-school children from EAL backgrounds. MUD CITYis a day-long piece of participatory theatre for Years 5 and 6 in primary schools based on The Breadwinner Trilogy, an extraordinary series of books by award-winning Canadian author Deborah Ellis that look at the stories of young people living in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mud City follows the fortunes of Afghan refugee Shauzia, as she copes with the difficulties of the Taliban regime, war in her country, a large refugee camp and life on the streets of Peshawar, Pakistan, before finally arriving as an asylum seeker in the UK. A team of 2 actor/facilitators, an actor/musician, a visual artist and an actress in-role present parts of Shauzia’s story from Mud City as she travels from Afghanistan to London. The audience are active participants in this incredible journey, using drama, descriptive writing, music, screen-printing and shadow puppetry to recreate Shauzia’s story and to explore how they might resolve the dilemmas faced by children like Shauzia.
