    Situation

The existing kitchen at Makwasinyi Primary is wholly inadequate to meet the demands of preparing food for more than 400 pupils, with a severe lack of cooking and storage space Not only that, its use of traditional open wood fires is dangerous, inefficient and uneconomical. By cooking in this way, the school consumes more than 20 tonnes of locally collected firewood each year - a practice which contributes heavily to local deforestation and associated environmental damage.

    Solution

We plan to construct a new, much larger, eco-kitchen at the school, as we have done previously at a number of our other partner schools. The kitchen will be fitted with a number of stainless steel energy-saving stoves in a range of sizes which can reduce firewood consumption by up to 75%.
