    Situation

The Project Many studies on siblings of children with a chronic illness indicate that siblings are at risk of negative psychological effects. Many young siblings experience lack of parental attention, isolation, ignorance about disability, and difficulty coping with their experiences. Often siblings of life-limited and life-threatened children also bear the added responsibility of helping to care for their brother or sister. These young carers have less opportunity for carefree fun than other children their age. This project will enable the siblings to meet with other children like themselves. Until siblings meet other siblings in environments such as this, they often believe that they are the only ones. These activity days are intended to make the sibling feel special as the focus is on them. These meetings will have fun activities for the children, many activities they could not do with their brother or sister such as kayaking, ball games, camping, quad biking, and pool activities. The children will be grouped by age and will have age appropriate activities. This project will also give an opportunity for siblings to share any anxieties of worries they are having with other children and with our trained staff. Outcomes This project aims to alleviate the loneliness and anxiety brought upon this marginalised group by their situation. Environments such as this help the siblings come to terms with their situation and make friends. This project will not only benefit the sibling who participates but the family as well. Siblings of children with severe illnesses sometimes have difficult questions for their parents. Staff in this project can listen and help answer these difficult questions, in addition to giving advice to the parents. Costs Costs for The Sibling Project include Sibling Workers, Care staff, and venue and activity costs.
