Trauma is a major and increasing cause of death in Africa. We train local health professionals in life saving techniques, and teach them how to pass this training on to others.

Situation
Primary trauma Care has been introduced into 35 developing countries worldwide, including some African ones in a piecemeal way. We want to make a co-ordinated effort to set up training, produce local trainers and devolve responsibility and capacity to them in 5 key African countries where we already have good contacts, over a 5 year period. In each country we provide a "Foundation Package" course which trains up to 40 health professinals, and also trains up to 10 local doctors in effective teaching and organisational skills to set up a self-sufficient programme in their country, run by themselves. We will provide continued support by follow-up visits over the next 3 years, helping as required with subsequent courses. We have documentary evidence of the success of such programmes in countries such as Indonesia, Pakistan, Paraguay, South Africa & Rwanda. We have now appointed an African regional director, and this project will support him in building a regional network of trained staff and instructors able to propoagate training locally with decreasing reliance on aid from Europe.
