    Situation

In early December 2008, Ellenor Lions Hospices launched an emergency appeal for £200,000 to ensure continuing hospice care for the 2,500 patients served by the organisation. The appeal was needed mainly because of the impact of the ‘credit-crunch’ on planned donations by local companies and individual supporters. The response was overwhelming but there is still more fundraising to be done. “I don’t think I have the words to thank everyone enough,” says Carol Stone, Chief Executive of Ellenor Lions Hospices. “The coverage by our local papers, TV and radio has been fantastic. It’s certainly boosted our morale to know that we have so many people who value the work we do for our community. The initial response in person, by mail, through our website and our shops has been all that we hoped for and more besides.” Carol adds, “The messages of support have been so heart warming and the donations received so encouraging. Children have given their Christmas money, companies have organised raffles and groups have had bucket collections to support us. It’s all been very heartening.” “But,” says Carol, “I’m afraid we can’t be complacent. We are now half way to reaching our target but we still have another £100,000 to raise. And that’s in addition to continuing our regular fundraising. That’s why we want to redouble our efforts and appeal to the community for their continued support. I realise that it’s asking a lot but if people can help by sending a donation - or by becoming a regular supporter, pledging a few pounds each month - it would help so much. Perhaps they could see it as a very special New Year resolution, knowing that the money will be put to good use.” The daughter of one of our patients we cared for made this comment. “A big thank you for all the help and support you gave our family and the kindness and respect that you showed to our mother during her final days. There are angels on earth and they are you. Thank you.” That really says it all. It’s why we are here and why we want to carry on giving the best service we can to everyone who needs it into the future.” To make a donation or become a regular giver call 01322 422831.
