The Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project is an £8.7 million project to protect and refurbish one of the most iconic buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries; the Mackintosh Building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his only public commission still in use for its original purpose. The project will also conserve the invaluable archives and collections housed within the building.

    Situation

The Glasgow School of Art is guardian of the A-listed Mackintosh Building; an astonishing and amazing building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which draws visitors from all over the world to explore and admire the detail of its architectural originality and ingenuity, or to study the fine historical collections. We need to conserve these valuable assets, while encouraging people to share the extraordinary building and its collections, explaining their importance and value, furthering their understanding and ensuring the visitors’ experience is the best possible. The Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project rises to this challenge, conserving the fabric, and restoring original features of the building, offering enhanced visitor access to key interiors and allowing other rooms to revert to their original purpose, and encouraging access to all the School’s heritage assets. The project comprises: •Repair and conservation work to the Mackintosh building, reinstatement of original features •Opening up additional rooms to the public and restoration of rooms to their original purpose. •Tour reception and interpretation area •Heating and ventilation system •Furniture museum, exhibition gallery and enhanced Research Centre •Enlarged Mackintosh Shop •Conservation of the Archives and Collections -Mackintosh furniture -Mackintosh works on paper -The GSA non-Mackintosh Collections -The Textile Collection -Archives This project will ensure that the Mackintosh Building continues to be used for its original purpose, motivating and inspiring future generations of artists, designers and architects, whilst welcoming more visitors. The total cost of the project if £8.7 million and the School still needs to raise more than £700,000 before the project's scheduled completion next year (2009).
