Your support is needed to ensure that the emerging street paper, Clin d'Oeil, develops into a sustainable enterprise and continues to provide local Burundian slum-dwellers with valuable employment & training opportunities that enable them to help themselves and their families out of poverty. The street paper launched in March 2009 and raises awareness of basic human rights, such as freedom of expression and opinion, covering a wide range of issues from poverty to human rights to health and education.

    Situation

A 13-year civil war has left Burundi in structural, economic and emotional disarray, spurring rapid rural-to-urban migration and a dramatic rise in unemployment and homelessness in the cities, particularly among youth and young adults abanadoned by destitute families. These young people make up a staggering 6,000 of the estimated 10.000 homeless people in Bujumbura city alone. Deeply scarred by the conflict and unable to find employment, many are forced to turn to begging or sex work to survive. Working in partnership with Clin d'Oeil, INSP provides consultancy support, advice, expertise and training for enterprising anti-poverty programmes, harnessing the vast collective knowledge and experience of its global membership for the benefit of newly-emerging and well-established street paper projects in their fight to end poverty. In recent years, street papers have become increasingly recognised for their relevance to the developing world. By combining a sustainable social enterprise model with an independent media voice, street papers provide a unique means to address urgent needs for poverty reduction, economic development, and free expression in some of the poorest countries on Earth. This project will provide direct employment opportunities to over 400 homeless people in Burundi over three years, indirectly supporting over 1800 additional family members who will benefit from their basic needs being met. The capacity of the Burundian partner NGO will be built and 15-20 staff and volunteers trained. Costs are for three years and include INSP training in-country, establishing an office, start-up costs for the paper, vendor support programme and inward study visits. This equates to a unit cost of just £1.26 per person per month lives will be measurably improved by this initiative.
