Just £35,000 can support one of the schools with which we are working in Uganda for one year. This investment will help the children at the school get a decent education, giving them the best possible chance of breaking free of the cycle of poverty in which they are trapped.

    Situation

Although primary education in Uganda is now free the standards of education are poor. In the areas where we work thousands of children are learning in make-shift classrooms made of mud and sticks or under trees. There are hardly any textbooks, desks, sanitary facilities or clean water supplies. As a result attendance and exam results at these schools are very low. Working closely with local communities and local authorities we select needy, rural schools and assess their most urgent needs. These often include a lack of permanent classrooms, toilets, medical supplies, textbooks and desks, as well as no access to a clean, safe water supply. £25,000 would enable us to provide the things which one of these schools most urgently requires - often a classroom block and toilet blocks. In addition, we will work closely with the school management committee and local community to educate them on the importance of sending their children, especially the girls, to school and to ensure that they are better able to run and maintain the school on a day to day basis. We have vast experience of working with primary schools in Uganda and are seeing incredible results at some of the schools we are working with. These include higher exam results, an increased number of children going onto secondary schools and increased enrolment and attendance.
