Eight out of ten people in Uganda rely on farming to meet their basic needs, but 98% of these are subsistence farmers, barely harvesting enough to feed themselves and their families. Poor harvests are a result of inefficient farming practices, the use of low quality seeds and fertilisers and old worn out equipment. Farmers have no way of accessing loans and so are caught in a cycle of poverty. Build Africa want to change this.

    Situation

The Build a Farm project is working with 236 farmers who are members of local youth groups. The farmers will learn how to transform their subsistence farms into profitable maize farming businesses. Firstly, farmers are organised into groups, all growing the same crops. This enables them to work together saving both time and money. We then work with these groups of farmers, training them in modern agricultural practices via demonstration plots which give them valuable hands on experience. We also provide training in business skills, so that they are equipped to deal with a demanding market. Farmers then apply these skills to their own land. We provide them with loans, in the form of seeds and equipment and help those without land, (often the women), gain access to land which they can farm. Build Africa then link the farmers to buyers who will buy their produce. All produce is then pooled at a central collection point from where the buyers can collect it. The farmers also have access to a savings and credit co-operative, which is linked to a bank and allows them to save their profits even after they have left the project. It is anticipated that this project will enable the farmers and their families to break out of the cycle of poverty in which they are trapped. They will be able to access a better quality of life, access services such as healthcare and housing and send their children to school. In addition, the farmers' increased income will lead to the transformation of rural economies and the additional food will feed thousands of people a year.
