We are planning to build a Maggie's Centre next to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. The Freeman Hospital is the main cancer centre in the region and Maggie's will provide a comprehensive programme of cancer support, which complements the work of the NHS. We have raised over £1 million towards our target and are seeking a further £1 million to begin building the Centre.

    Situation

Maggie's Centres have a fantastic track record of supporting people affected by cancer - both patients and carers/family members - in Scotland over the last 13 years. More recently, we have opened our first Centre in England, in London. We offer a wide range of information and support, including counselling for individuals and groups, welfare benefits advice, relaxation, stress management and complementary therapies, advice on diet and nutrition, and art therapy. No referral is required, and the whole programme is free of charge. Our work is fully endorsed and supported by NHS cancer clinicians. In common with all our existing Centres, we have commissioned a world-renowned architect to design the building in Newcastle, which will allow us to accommodate at least 10,000 visits annually. The quality of the design and decor in our Centres make a huge impact, creating a calming and comforting atmosphere which helps vulnerable people find their feet again. The building will be in the grounds of the busy Freeman Hospital, which has recently completed its own building programme to become a first class centre of excellence in cancer care for a population of over 2 million in the North East. Please don't hesitate to contact us to find out more about our work, or to arrange to visit one of our existing Centres. Thank you.
