Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan - the most deadly place in the world to give and receive birth. For every 10,000 births in Badakhshan, more than 650 mothers die*. More than this, those who do survive face a 40% likelihood that their baby will die before their first birthday. The vast majority of this loss of life is preventable - see details below. * Source : Bartlett L, et al. Lancet 2005; 365 : 864-70

    Situation

Medair is addressing the issues through construction and/or implementation of the following: * Primary Health Care project in four remote districts of Badakhshan * An Emergency Centre (maternity care) in one of Medair’s Health Centres. * Rural health clinics to improve access to health care * Emergency Response to natural disasters in Badakhshan * Rural water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion in central highlands Who is Medair assisting ? 193,700 people depend on the Medair Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) programme for access to Health Services in Badakhshan. Approximately 1,200 families or 8,400 people are being assisted in the rural villages targeted by the WatSan programme. Medair is seeking funding to construct a Comprehensive Health Centre in the extremely remote district of Khwahan, where almost 25,000 people are unable to access health care during the five winter months, when heavy snow and avalanches cut off access to neighbouring districts. YOUR GIFT IS WORTH MANY TIMES MORE THROUGH MEDAIR: Big institutional donors fund Medair because they see the quality of our work, but they will only cover part of the costs. So without gifts from people like you, we could not help anyone. Your gift will close the gap – and, at the same time, the impact of your gift is multiplied many times over. In 2007, every £1 given to Medair by an individual, enabled £5.85 of help. We call this our multiplier, so please respond now and know that whatever you give will make a big difference. Thank you. Please call to discuss your interest in this project or Medair's work more broadly. Thank you.
