As fighting continues and rain-starved crops fail across much of Somalia, its estimated that 3.2 million people need emergency humanitarian aid. In times of terrible crisis like this, the children are always the most vulnerable. You can give life-saving, specialist care, to one malnourished child for just £20. Please give now and help us reach and treat the children in most urgent need of help. Thank you.

    Situation

The people of Somalia are enduring one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Conflict, sharply increased food prices, and a deepening drought have given rise to an IDP (Internally Displaced Person) population of between 870,000 to 1,020,000 (UNHCR, 9 January ’08). Those that have fled the violence seeking security for their families now find themselves in overstretched IDP camps where living conditions are squalid and food inadequate. The situation is expected to get even worse, especially in regards to malnutrition rates. An estimated 240,000 children under 5 years of age are acutely malnourished in Somalia, of which 60,000 are severely malnourished and at an increased risk of death if they do not receive the appropriate specialist care. Medair has begun a nutrition programme, to address the most critical humanitarian gap in Burao, Somaliland at present. The intervention will be complemented with support to the health system, health education, water and sanitation to address underlying causes of malnutrition and target the most vulnerable populations in and around Burao town, including IDPs, marginalized communities, and other vulnerable groups. More detailed objectives include: A supplementary feeding programme • Moderate malnourished children under the age of 5 years • Moderate malnourished pregnant and lactating women • Children under 5 who are discharged from the Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) • Six to eight mobile OTPs (Out-patient Therapeutic Programme) for treatment of severe malnutrition without complications. These are strategically located at sites that give access to the most vulnerable communities. Services at these OTP sites are exclusive to IDP populations but open to the community at large, including host communities and marginalised groups. • Support of the stabilisation centre within the hospital for severely malnourished children with complications.
