We wish to develop two drop in rooms for use by almost 100 people with autism. They will be a space where people with autism can be themselves. A space where they can develop self-confidence and learn important day to day living skills, thereby increasing their self esteem and independence. Only £250 remains to be raised for this project!

    Situation

Many people with autism find that they lack autonomy in their lives and do not develop life skills such as making a cup of tea, reading their post or shopping for necessities and presents. They may spend much of their time at home with little social interaction outside their family. Our Outreach Services helps people with autism to develop independent life skills through a range of activities including going to leisure facilities, shopping and getting work experience. We also help them learn how to undertake everyday tasks such as reading and understanding post, making simple meals and drinks, and expressing emotions in an appropriate way. Through all of these, we aim to develop independent life skills and build confidence and self-esteem. However, at present, due to a lack of suitable facilities, all of this work has to take place in public venues such as cafes, libraries and shops. Whilst these venues are suitable for certain activities, they are not suitable for all and therefore limit the work we can do. In addition, if the person becomes agitated, there is no private place for them to go to be alone and calm down. Our Outreach Support team has identified two rooms (one in Worksop and one in Nottingham) that will be designated as a drop-in room, which will enable us to offer a confidential space where we can work with individuals with autism on a one-to-one or two-to-one basis. The work will include helping them to develop strategies for coping with anxiety, more appropriate methods for communicating anxiety and developing independent life skills. This work will help people with autism to develop their self-esteem and confidence. Ultimately, the room will be a space where our service users can be themselves without having to disguise their condition or be judged by members of the public who may not understand how autism can affect people. The full cost to decorate and equip the two rooms is £5,000. Your support will enable almost 100 people with autism to access a space where they can be themselves. A space where they can develop self-confidence and learn important day to day living skills, thereby increasing their self esteem and independence.
