    Situation

Every week thousands of individuals across the UK volunteer their time to work as stewards and champions of the Network so that millions of people can walk and cycle to benefit their health and the environment. Nearly 600 new volunteer Rangers signed up in 2007, taking the total number of active Rangers to 2,500. Our Rangers look after and maintain their local section of the National Cycle Network, making sure it remains safe and attractive; the time and energy invested by these volunteers is an essential ingredient of the Network’s success. These volunteers work: • 150,000 hours each year… • which is the equivalent of 77 extra staff … • valued at £937,500… They in turn need extensive training, encouragement and support. The programme is extremely active and visible on the Network throughout the UK. Rangers hold hundreds of activities and events – like work days and rides - attended by thousands of members of the public every year, to encourage active travel, spread awareness of the Network and get more people active in their community. We ask donors to contribute towards the continuation of this highly successful programme, which will result in getting more volunteers active in their local communities, improving local routes and encouraging thousands more people to walk and cycle more often.
