Fort Nelson, Hampshire is home to Royal Armouries' collection of artillery, one of the finest and largest collections of historic cannon in the world. The project is to redevelop this little-known Victorian gun fort into a national and international hub of learning and entertainment.

    Situation

Fort Nelson saw a rise in visitor numbers between 2001-2007 from 40,000 to 90,000 per year. The size of the existing galleries and visitor facilities are unable to cope with demand, especially for learning groups. Other problems include access and car parking issues: the Fort has no dedicated car park, visitors currently use an area which involves crossing a dangerous and busy road on the brow of a hill. We want to provide easy, fun, and SAFE access to our site and collections.

    Solution

The Fort Nelson re-development will feature a car park on the same side of the road as the Fort, a new Admissions Complex with new cafe and shop, a lift to ensure safe access for all to both levels of the site, new galleries dedicated to the artillery collection and the social history of the Fort, and the Classroom of the Future, our educational centre of excellence, developed in partnership with local schools, teachers and learners.
