Build a new multi-purpose community facility to be operated by local community members to help transform the lives of people in the deprived neighbourhoods of Scotstoun, Glasgow. Create a unique centre that will help young and old people alike, and anyone with specific needs, to access and enjoy a range of innovative, people-centred training, employment, health, childcare, youth, recreational, environmental and other services and activities to inspire them, move them through key life transitions, whilst improving their sense of well-being and quality of life within and through their immediate community.

    Situation

The community's original vision for urban renewal of the Balmoral Street catchment area of Scotstoun included a new modern, multi-purpose community centre. The community wants to increase services delivered locally and sensitively to its key audience, whilst opening up access to a vacant, brownfield site in a heavily industrialised zone in close proximity to the River Clyde and residential areas. There is a need for more childcare facilities in the vicinity, including training supplemented by qualifications, ICT training and equipment, youth health initiatives, environmental activities such as recycling, as directed by the environment trust, focussing services on people with particular needs including those with disabilities, mental and social problems. A multi-purpose community hall, healthy eating cafe, ICT suite, childcare facility with external play area, meeting rooms, training facilities and offices are proposed in the building plans, housing a number of local tenant organisations with compatible charitable objectives such as Momentum, Physical Disability Support Team and the Youth Health Project. We have now raised a grand total of: £1,873,000 including land purchase, planning and building consents. This includes building capital of: £1,528,000. However, our total development costs are £2,576,247 and rising and we urgently need financial support to fill this funding gap. Our main contributors so far are: Big Lottery, Glasgow City Council (capital programme, education/childcare, Shipbuilding Taskforce) and the former Social Inclusion Partnership. We continue to pursue as many funders as possible and the latest count is 56, including the Big Give! However, we need to move forward urgently as the Trust, its subsidiary community organisation, 'Heart for Scotstoun' and the community itself wants and deserves this facility now. Thank you for your kind attention.
