To give desperately poor and isolated Burmese refugees in Delhi an education that will enable them to find a job and earn money whilst in Delhi and which, when democracy comes, they can use to rebuild their lives in Burma.

    Situation

There are over 4,000 Burmese refugees in Delhi. They have fled from Buma for one reason or another, very often in fear of their lives. The majority of them are Chin as their state borders India. They are desperately poor, and without either Hindi or English they are utterly isolated in Delhi. The majority of them live about an hour to the west of Delhi in an area where illegal factories thrive on cheap labour, and although the Burmese are paid less than local workers they are all desperate to find a job and earn money. Prospect Burma has funded a free English language school in Delhi for 10 years and we currently give scholarship grants to about 80 university students in India. The school costs £18,000 a year to run. We have about 60 students all of whom are desperate for an education that will enable them to live with some dignity in a foreign land until the time comes when they can return home to Burma.
