    Situation

Burmese refugees arrive in Delhi from Mizoram having walked for many days through the jungle from Burma. They have no knowledge of Hindi, and little of English and are therefore unable to obtain an education or work in India, or to intermingle with the community. The majority of them are Chin, and they are desperately poor. Prospect Burma set up a free English language school in the heart of the refugee community in 1999 to enable them to mix within the Indian community.

    Solution

With some knowledge of English, the Burmese refugees are able to communicate with the local Indians. It enables them to access the internet and a whole world of information, some of them will be able to go on to university in India, others learn skills and gain employment as they are able to communicate.
