Situation
Deaf young people are often socially excluded and misunderstood due to their disability and differing communication needs. As a result, these young people are particularly vulnerable in society. A school term project (May-June 2008 Phase 1; and March - April 2009 Phase 2), with young deaf people from Liverpool Deaf Centre Youth Club for Phase 1 and Broadgreen International School Deaf Resource Base for Phase 2 of this project. Enabling young deaf and hearing-impaired people to develop drawing, painting as well as digital arts skills, and explore their own deaf culture and experience in order to create a series of comics normalising the deaf experience in order to challenge prejudices that they face from people in the wider society due to their differing communication and cultural needs; supporting creative skills development and inform a positive social change. The young people participating will be aged between 10 -16 years of age and are all based within Liverpool. Volunteers will come from the refugee communities and SOLA ARTS’ Artists in Exile group, ‘Connecting Cultures’. Having achieved £24,844 funding from BBC Children in Need, £800 from Sir Harry Pilkington Trust and £500 from Liverpool Mutual Homes, we require a further £1500-00 to cover the production of the Comic Book for this project.
