Many mainstream health services are not easily accessible to deaf people due to their communication needs. Healthy Deaf Days are health education workshops that provide information and advice to deaf people in British Sign Language to equip them with the skills they need to live healthily.

Situation

Many deaf BSL users miss out on learning, and some of the adults we do support do not understand the importance of a balanced diet (according to a recent study, over 60% of deaf people are overweight and 51% of deaf people have elevated cholesterol compared to 17% of hearing people), or the risk of sexually transmitted diseases or even what cancer is.

Solution

Each Healthy Deaf day event is delivered in BSL using deaf presenters. the project manager works with partner deaf organisation in locations across the UK to identify attendees. the workshops cover a wide range of topics including healthy eating awareness in sex, drugs and alcohol, taster classes in reflexology/massage and gym sessions. Where appropriate, there is input from other health charities focusing on issues such as diabetes or heart disease
