Many mainstream health services are not easily accessible to deaf people due to their communication needs. Healthy Deaf Days are health education workshops that provide information and advice to deaf people in British Sign Language to equip them with the skills they need to live healthily and independently.

    Situation

Many deaf British Sign Language users miss out on learning and some of the adults we support do not understand the importance of a balanced diet (according to a recent study, over 60% of deaf people are overweight and 51% of deaf people have elevated cholesterol compared to 17% of hearing people), or the risk of sexually transmitted diseases or even what cancer is. Following a pilot project funded by the Department of Health, Sign has demonstrated the need to develop this model for healthy living workshops and events. Feedback from these Healthy Deaf Days has revealed worrying levels of lifestyle-related diseases – particularly type two diabetes, stroke and cancer. Each Healthy Deaf Day event is delivered in British Sign Language using deaf presenters. The project manager works with partner deaf organisations in locations across the UK to identify attendees. The workshops cover a wide range of topics including healthy eating, awareness in sex, drugs and alcohol, taster classes in reflexology/ massage and gym sessions. Where appropriate, there is input from other health charities, focusing on issues such as diabetes or heart disease and we continue to lobby these types of mainstream providers to make their support services accessible to deaf people. In 2007/8 the workshops have so far provided advice to more than 160 deaf people through eight workshops, with six more planned before the end of the year. Due to the success of the project, we wish to continue running and developing the programme over the next 3 years, reaching out to even more deaf people in need of advice. In addition, where possible, we wish to develop new partnership projects such as ‘Weightwatchers’ for deaf people that will help to meet their specific needs.
