    Situation

There is a severe lack of supported housing provision for deaf people with learning difficulties or mental health problems – and this is particularly true in the West Midlands. Many have to be sent out of county, away from their friends and family. Others languish in inappropriate settings, such as psychiatric hospitals or old people’s homes. The need to develop a Supported Housing service for deaf people with enduring mental health in the West Midlands region has been identified following approaches from Denmark House and associated mental health commissioners within Birmingham. Sign’s new home will provide a care pathway for current out of county clients to return to their originating authority, improving access to family and other social networks - which are so vital for mental well-being. The project will provide five self-contained one-bedroom flats and additional communal areas. Each tenant will receive an individualised care and support package (Person Centred Plan). At least half of the care staff will be deaf and all will be fluent in BSL. Ongoing costs of running and maintaining the service will be met through fee income (Service Level Agreements with Social Services). £40,000 will enable us to equip the flats with furniture and appliances, white goods and fixtures, to empower residents to live as independently as possible. Many of our residents come from the care system after their families reject them. More often than not they arrive with very few possessions, yet they spend a lot of time within the Sign homes. Given their hearing loss, the comfort and visual quality of their environment is hugely important and therapeutic.
