Malaria remains a huge health burden on Uganda. This project will be based in the Buliisa district and provide over 23,000 Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) to protect over 47,000 pregnant women and young children. The women will be educated on how to use a LLIN effectively and home visits will be made afterwards to monitor and supervise the correct usage.

    Situation

In Uganda only 34% of households own a mosquito net, with just 16% owning a LLIN. (In the Western region, net ownership is below average, with 20% of households owning a net and only 10.6% of households owning an insecticide treated net). Malaria incidence is also high in Western Uganda, with a recent report showing that 35% of children under five in the western region had suffered from malaria during the two weeks preceding the survey. The project will distribute 23,768 LLINs. Each LLIN is suitbale for two people meaning that over 47,536 pregnant women and young children will be protected from malaria. The aim will be to ensure over 85% coverage in the area. This project can be scaled up or down depending on the budget. Summary Budget Activity Amount of LLINs Unit Price Total(GBP) Procurement and 23,768 3.75 £89,130 distribution of LLINs (including education and monitoring costs)
