Your support will allow Hearing Dogs to expand our dual trained assistance dog partnerships across the UK. Such dogs are trained specifically for people with a hearing impairment and another disability or sensory loss.

    Situation

‘An angel at the end of a harness’ is how one deaf blind lady describes her dual trained assistance dog ‘Erica’. Initially the dual dog concept arose through the request of one of our established hearing dog recipients after she started to lose her sight as well as her hearing. We now work jointly with Guide Dogs to train a small number of very special dogs to work for people who have both sight and hearing loss. Additionally we have also been approached by a number of applicants who have other disabilities as well as deafness, for us to train dogs to work for their specific needs. As a result, Hearing Dogs is working with a number of other Assistance Dog charities on an ad hoc basis. Our training of dual assistance dogs is deemed of such importance, with a definite ongoing requirement, that dual trained assistance dogs will continue to be provided as best we can. However, as we struggle to fulfil our core work too, this training niche will suffer, and its potential will certainly not be realised. We need financial support to help us increase the scale of this life changing work, and build a project team at Hearing Dogs dedicated to developing dual assistance trained dogs. Each dog currently costs around £40,000 for its training and the lifelong aftercare provided.
