We are conducting a two year research project to discover if our specially trained hearing dogs can provide the same amazing support for deaf children as they currently do for adults.

    Situation

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has been training dogs to alert severely deaf adults to vital everyday sounds for over 25 years. We believe that we should extend our work to include deaf children. We know how our dogs help practically and emotionally and believe that they would similarly benefit a child’s psychological well-being and social development. We have started an innovative two year research project to scientifically prove this but need £50,000 to complete the second year of the study. The project has the potential to transform the lives of some of the 35,000 deaf children in the UK by laying the foundations for independence. For many of these children, being deaf, means that they feel isolated, lack confidence and have difficulty interacting with both their peers and the world in general. This can affect their emotional and educational development, which in turn greatly influences their future independence as adults including their chances of gaining employment. We would be grateful for any financial support to help us complete this potentially life changing project, produce the report following the study and then publicise the results. We receive no government funding and so are reliant on support from trusts, foundations, corporates and individuals. Please help.
