Saving Meadows: The statistics are frightening. Over three million hectares – or 97% - of our flower rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s, and losses continue today. In the 1930s, wildflower meadows and grasslands covered 16% of Britain’s landscape; now they cover less than 1%.

Situation

97% of our flower rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s. In the 1930s, wildflower meadows and grasslands covered 16% of Britain's landscape; now they cover less than 1%. One-third of all plant species that have become extinct in the UK over the past 100 years were plants in meadows and grasslands

Solution

With no quick fix it is even more important to conserve our remaining historic meadows. We know that they continue to be lost, often being particularly vulnerable when land changes ownership and management practices alter. The establishment of new meadows is also vital, not only to help meadows return to be part of the British countryside but also to prevent them being all but lost entirely. This is what Plantlife is working to achieve
