Marie Curie Cancer Care is aiming to double the number of patients we reach by 2013. We’re looking for a very special group of supporters, who share our belief in giving more people the right to choose at end of life, and who can make a significant contribution to that goal by sponsoring a Marie Curie Nurse.

    Situation

Working in communities across the UK – from remote Scottish islands through villages and towns to our biggest cities – Marie Curie Nurses provide physical, spiritual, social and emotional support to patients and families at the end of life. We are committed to reaching more patients and families with the care and support they need. In 2007, we made a commitment to double the number of patients we support from 17,000 to 35,000 by 2013, and we’ve launched the Marie Curie Nursing Fund to help us reach this important goal. A Marie Curie Registered Nurse costs £19,000 for one year* Marie Curie Registered Nurses provide direct patient care to support physical and emotional needs. They are medically trained so can also give any medication prescribed and perform technical nursing procedures. A Marie Curie Healthcare Assistant costs £13,000 for one year* Marie Curie Healthcare Assistants also provide direct patient care to support physical and emotional needs. They are trained in safe administration of medicine so they can give pre-prescribed medicines to patients following strict guidelines. *includes all travel, communications, training, referral centre and regional support structure costs “The Marie Curie Nurses were wonderful. They provided as much care as they could, but due to a lack of resources, they were unable to help mum every night. However, she coped and, with the help of the Marie Curie Nurses three nights a week, dad was able to have a dignified death at home, where he wanted to be.” Gary
