The programme aims to help musically talented but economically disadvantaged young people whose potential has been identified through their involvement in the state funded Wider Opportunities Programme in schools. Without further funding their music making would be stopped in its tracks: this programme aims to support the potential of these young people with sustained tuition and mentoring for a minumum of two years.

    Situation

We know this project is needed due to our own stakeholder research prior to the creation of our current Business Plan which identified the lack of sustainable provision for young people whose talent is only just emerging as a result of the Wider Opportunities programme. Young people are only guaranteed one year's free group instrumental tuition through the programme at Key Stage 2 (7-11 years old): after this point provision is entirely dependent on school budgets and the ability of parents/carers to fund ongoing tuition. It's clear that in many parts of the country there is no ongoing support available, meaning that an economically disadvantaged young person with musical potential may have no opportunity to develop that potential further. Project strands: Each young person will benefit from individual instrumental tuition in any musical genre for 30 minutes per week for a total of 60 weeks (the equivalent of two academic years) from an appropriately qualified music teacher. They will also benefit from 60 minutes mentoring per week from a professional musician over the same period: this will include accompanying the young person to musical events and providing them with advice and networking opportunities More young people will become involved in the programme as it expands: 36 young people in the first year and 72 young people in the second year. Key programme objectives are: To provide young people with an inspiring and supportive musical opportunity, enabling them to build on their emerging talent To establish an effective means of supporting this talent in economically disadvantaged environments where such support would not otherwise be possible To enable them to make considerable progress in their instrumental playing, impacting positively on their confidence and motivation to continue to develop as musicians To enable them to have their musical knowledge and experience broadened and enriched through their relationship with a professional musician mentor To evidence that this model is worthy of longer term funding Summary budget: Music teachers' fees: £16,200 (Year 1) and £32,400 (Year 2) Professional musician mentors' fees: £32,400 (Year 1) and £64,800 (Year 2) Project overheads: £4,188 (Year 1) and £5,000 (Year 2) Total expenditure Year 1: £52,788 and Year 2: £102,200
