Train HIV Postive Mothers and Fathers as " Expert Patients" to help with clinic tasks like reception duties, pill counting and supervising child play areas. Expert Patients feel good about themselves and are role models in their communities. They free up doctors, nurses and pharmacists to treat more children every day and provide a friendly and empathetic face to anxious new patients.

    Situation

There are not enough health professionals to administer the roll out of anti-retrovirals to HIV positive children in Africa. One to One Children’s Fund has funded a successful pilot programme for the recruitment and employment of 140 expert patients in 35 paediatric AIDS clinics in Africa. In 2010 we want to double the number of Expert Patients and clinics on our programme with plans to extend this to 100 clinics by 2012. Expert Patients are mothers and fathers living with HIV, who are trained in clinic tasks and contribute to improved care in their communities. The Expert Patient Programme engages andempowers people living with HIV, helps to create efficient child-friendly clinics and also has the following benefits: • Eases the work load of clinic teams, freeing doctors and nurses to concentrate on complex procedures • Expands the capacity of small clinics to reach more children • Uses the knowledge and expertise of HIV/AIDS patients in a positive and affirming way • Builds the self-esteem and confidence of the Expert Patients • Contributes to the household income of the Expert Patients Each Expert Patient is paid a stipend and travel costs of £50 per month. Our target of 280 patients will cost us £14,000 per month plus training costs.
