The aim of the programme is to create an AIDS-free generation with a unique approach centred around the game of football. Through the language of football the children are educated on both the dangers of HIV/AIDS as well as life skills in an attempt to bring about positive behavioural changes.

    Situation

HIV/AIDS is an overwhelming issue throughout Africa and children seem to feel the effects more than most, whether it is they themselves who have the disease or those who are meant to care for them who have become debilitated. In 2008 there were 2.8 million children worldwide living with AIDS whilst there were and estimated 15 million children orphaned by AIDS, 90% of both figures are in Sub-Sahran Africa. This leads to a generation of both psychologically and physically affected children.

    Solution

The analogies that are drawn between football and life during the project teach children essential skills allowing them to avoid the pit-falls associated with their socio-cultural environment. One to One Children’s Fund is also the co-founder of Paediatric Aids Treatment for Africa (PATA) which created a network of over 180 paediatric clinics in 24 African countries and works with teams at the clinics to provide better support to children and families affected by HIV.
