    Situation

In South Africa, 43,000 children died of HIV/AIDS related illnesses last year. The Eastern Cape (EC) Province is one of the poorest regions in South Africa. The HIV/AIDS prevalence was 26 percent in 2009. However, it is estimated that 23,000 children were infected with HIV in the last 12 months in the Eastern Cape alone. The availability and quality of anti-retroviral (ART) treatment to treat HIV/AIDS is inadequate, especially limited in rural areas.

    Solution

This project will solve the problem by working with local communities to eradicate paediatric HIV, by stopping the transmission of HIV from mothers to babies, identify and support babies, children and adolescents who are HIV positive and provide high quality treatment and care for them within the community. We will fill critical gaps in healthcare services by providing nurses and community outreach in new ART sites and replicating our project to benefit more children and carers across the EC.
