For all HIV infected and affected children in Sub-Saharan Africa to receive comprehensive, high quality health services. PATA believes this can be achieved by supporting committed clinic teams to share knowledge and inspire other health workers to improve through a ripple effect in the community.

    Situation

Over 2.8 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa are HIV positive. Fewer than 22% are treated with life-saving anti-retroviral drugs. In 2010, around 390,000 children were infected with HIV; over 90 per cent of them live in sub-Saharan Africa (UNICEF 2010). It is difficult for healthcare workers to share ideas, successes and challenges across the region, however PATA could help them improve care provided to children living with HIV/AIDS.

    Solution

We co-founded PATA in 2004. This network of multidisciplinary treatment teams across sub-Saharan Africa work with children, adolescents and their families. The network is supported by local, regional and pan African Forums, and knowledge-sharing platforms are used to deliver up to date medical advice and develop models of best practice. Teams made up of a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, nutritionist and counsellor, return to clinics with quality improvement goals to be reached in the following year.
