More than 350 young people with mental and physical difficulties have already benefited from this unique project which aims to transform lives simply by getting fly-fishing on to the school curriculum. The main target group for the project are those between the ages of 14 and 16 with special educational needs. The aim is to teach them the skills of fly-fishing and in doing so explore and enjoy other areas within the natural world.

    Situation

Fishing for Schools has been purpose-built, by The Countryside Alliance Foundation, to offer skills and confidence to young people who so often never attain their true potential and face the risk of being sidelined by society. Feedback from courses has revealed a dramatic difference in the behaviour of many participants and some life-enhancing moments. We believe that Fishing For Schools has merely scratched the surface so far and we want to be able to take this worthwhile programme into many more schools with pupils who respond well to this kind of outdoor learning. To do this we need to be able to recruit and train more coaches as we as provide transport for the children to the fisheries. The Fishing For Schools project costs £2,000 per school day, to include all planning, hiring of fisheries, equipment, staffing and transport. In total, we are seeking £250,000 over the next three years to take Fishing for Schools into a further 100 schools.
