The Brokerage works with students from disadvantaged inner London boroughs raising aspirations around future careers. By setting up a 'virtual' City office in either the City of London or Docklands, we could enable 100's more schools and 1000's more young people to 'experience' corporate life and find out more about working within business and discover what actually goes on in those amazing office blocks dominating London's skyline.

    Situation

The Brokerage Working in the City programme brings over 1000 inner city students aged from 13-18 into City firms each year. We run over 80 half day workshops (involving groups of 15 - 25 students) and each session is hosted by a corporate supporter. In addidtion we run outreach sessions in schools and tailor made visits to offices to support particular groups of students or a specific aspect of the Work Related learning/Business or Enterprise Curricula. As the programme continues to expand the 'ask' on firms grows. If we were able to set up a 'virtual office' in a prestigious location within London's centre, we would be able to offer schools and colleges, not just from inner London but across the UK, with an opportunity to find out about corporate life. We imagine having room for a seminar space, an area set up to reflect perhaps a trading area, back office functions and to involve companies such as Reuters or Bloomberg in providing up to the minute business news. We would run a range of activities which would increase team work, confidence, communication skills. We would utilise training resources our corporate supporters use for their interns such as trading games and other resources produced by the IFS, FSA etc. If this was successful we would seek to roll it out to other major centres within the UK.
