Situation

There is an acute shortage of hydrotherapy pools. The NHS does not provide long-term hydrotherapy. Even if an individual’s disability is life-long, NHS provision of hydrotherapy ceases after 6 sessions. Cerebral palsy (permanent damage to the undeveloped brain),MS, Parkinsons’ disease result in babies, children and adults being in continual pain, unable to walk, dress, even carry out the simplest of tasks for day-to-day living.

Solution

White Lodge Centre has the only hydrotherapy pool outside a hospital in north Surrey. It is used 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. This project will provide access to a hydrotherapy pool where long term hydrotherapy can be provided. White Lodge Centre provides long-term hydrotherapy: the NHS does not. Physiotherapists carry out a series of gentle exercises in warm water. The resistance of the water helps strengthen muscles, improving an individual’s range of movement.
