Children today are not going outside to play and they are spending less and less time playing together. Our children's struggle to relate to the natural world and connect with each other could have serious consequences for our environment and our society. A generation that does not understand or value the natural world will not strive to protect it. A generation that does not value society will not work together to save it. Mud Between Your Toes aims to create opportunities for children and young people to get out more, to re-connect with the natural world and their community - to experience, understand and celebrate their sense of place and purpose in the world they live in - locally and globally.

    Situation

Children and young people today have much less contact with nature. In one generation the degree to which children are allowed to play outside has gone into free-fall. All sorts of problems result including health issues such as allergies and heart disease through to psychological problems. Children don't play together in the same way, or learn to explore and have adventures. They increasingly find nature alien and see land and earth as something to stay away from 'because it makes you messy'. Mud Between Your Toes is a project that creates opportunities for children and young people to get outdoors and play together. The scheme comprises 3 core activities: * Stuck in the Mud - an adventure survival programme where young people explore their own local wild spaces. * Survive and Thrive - Designed for young teenagers, this programme explores the powerful mix of outdoor pursuits, deep immersion in nature and environmental understanding. It combines physical, mental and team challenges such as canoeing, rock climbing, orienteering, shelter building, camping, cooking, fire-making and global exploration at Eden. * Dens and hideaways - Families are invited to re-awaken the brilliant tradition of den building. The programme is experimental and a chance to play with ideas. It encourages creative approaches to learning and playing in outdoor places - connecting the global perspective at the Eden Project with local natural environments, homes, families, communities, school grounds and classrooms.
