    Situation

UNICEF’s long experience in disaster relief has demonstrated that returning children to school as quickly as possible is one of the most valuable emergency interventions that can take place. But with thousands of schools and day care centres in urgent need of repair and rehabilitation and public funds stretched beyond their limit, UNICEF plan to support the Department of Education and local governments to speed up the process. Concentrating on the Island of Panay and the Maguindanao and Shariff Kabunsuan districts of Mandanao Island UNICEF will refurbish 50 schools and 25 day care centres that will directly affect the lives of 10,500 school children and 6,000 pre-school children. In addition we will provide basic education supplies and materials to schools and teachers, as well as individual learning packs for children, many of whom lost everything in the floods. Budget (per school/centre): Day Care Centre: £7,500 To repair and rehabilitate one day care centre for 240 children and their teachers, provide children’s packs (school bag, books, pencils, soap, toothpaste etc), teacher’s packs (teaching aids and materials), Day Care Centre packs (education toys, story books, musical instruments, teaching materials and hygiene kits) School: £9,800 To repair and rehabilitate one school for 210 children and their teachers includes; the construction of new classrooms and installation of improved water and sanitation facilities, provide children’s packs (school bag, books, pencils, text books, soap, toothpaste etc), teacher’s packs (teaching aids and materials) School packs (educational toys, 100 book library, musical instruments, science reference materials, globes, text books and hygiene kits) We are seeking funding towards the target budget of £500,000 The Impact: The needs of children and particularly their education wellbeing are often forgotten in emergencies. This planned action will ensure 6,000 pre-school children and 10,500 school children can receive an ongoing education to help bring normalcy back into their lives. Restore 25 day care centres and 50 schools making them safe and functional for children and teachers alongside strengthening the emergency and disaster response capacity in the schooling system in the Panay and Mandanao Islands
